Digestive Disease Week® packs thousands of cutting-edge research presentations into just four days. To make sure attendees catch the most thought-provoking research, representatives from each of the four sponsoring societies will highlight the meeting’s top abstracts during Tuesday afternoon’s Best of DDW 2019 session.

“This is one of my favorite sessions,” said session moderator and DDW Council Chair Grace H. Elta, MD, AGAF, FASGE. “You get a snapshot of what’s most important and new. I’m not a hepatologist, but it’s cool to hear what is the latest and greatest from AASLD, for example. You get to catch up on the new, important things that you might have missed at the meeting.”

During the two-hour session, each society representative has 30 minutes to discuss the top abstracts (usually four to eight) from their society, highlighting key points and providing commentary that will place the research in the context of current best practices. The highlighted research will be a mix of basic science, translational and clinical work.

This year’s presenters are Richard K. Sterling, MD, MSc, FAASLD, from AASLD; C. Richard Boland, MD, AGAF, from AGA; Bret T. Petersen, MD, FASGE, from ASGE; and Daniela Molena, MD, from SSAT. The presenters work closely with the societies’ program chairs to select the most important research from thousands of abstracts presented at the meeting.

Although the Best of DDW session is on the last afternoon of the meeting, Dr. Elta said the room is almost always overflowing. She recommends arriving early.

“We get a good turnout there on a Tuesday afternoon — the fourth day of the meeting,” Dr. Elta said. “There are always people catching flights home, but it’s always a well-attended session. It’s a great cap to an exceptional meeting.”
