Experts will demonstrate basic, intermediate and advanced ESD techniques

An international faculty featuring some of the world’s leading authorities on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) will offer guidance for practitioners of all skill levels during Tuesday’s ASGE Hands-On Workshop: ESD.

“It’s important to stay up to date on the indications and different methods of ESD because physicians are increasingly moving to minimally invasive options, especially for removal of early cancers,” said workshop moderator Reem Z. Sharaiha, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and an attending physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York.

“ESD has been performed in other parts of the world, particularly in Asia, for some time now, but we’ve been slow to adopt it here in the U.S., partly because of reimbursement issues,” Dr. Sharaiha continued. “But over the past few years, it’s become very apparent that this is the way of the future. There’s definitely a learning curve to the procedure, though, and people need to learn that it’s not something you can just go out there and do. It’s something that requires skill, learning on animal models and being proctored by people who know what they’re doing.”

The workshop faculty features expert endoscopists recruited worldwide to offer guidance and advice for novice and experienced endoscopists alike.

“These are people who have been doing this procedure for years and know what the nuances and challenges are, so they will be able to tailor their advice to the skill level of the participants,” Dr. Sharaiha said. “This is a great opportunity for participants to learn the basics of ESD and understand what it means to have ESD at their institution. It’s also an invaluable opportunity for them to make contact with some of the top experts in the field, so when they start doing these procedures they have people they can go to when they have questions or need advice.”

The invited faculty for the workshop are: Alberto Baptista, MD, Hospital de Clinicas Caracas, Venezuela; Juergen H. Hochberger, MD, FASGE, Strasbourg University Hospitals, France; Alessandro Repici, MD, Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy; Haruhiro Inoue, MD, FASGE, Showa University Koto-Toyosu Hospital, Yokohama, Japan; Hitomi Minami, MD, Nagasaki University Hospital, Japan; Naohisa Yahagi, MD, Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan; Hironori Yamamoto, MD, PhD, FASGE, AGAF, Jichi Medical University, Tochigi, Japan; Amrita Sethi, MD, FASGE, Columbia University Medical Center, New York; Sergey V. Kantsevoy, MD, Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, MD; Peter V. Draganov, MD, FASGE, AGAF, University of Florida Health, Gainesville; and Christopher Gostout, MD, FASGE, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
