Michael R. Lucey, MD, FAASLD, will present Tuesday morning’s AASLD State-of-the-Art Lecture “Liver Transplantation for Extended Criteria Recipients.” The term ‘extended criteria’ is borrowed from the donor literature and doesn’t have a specific definition, he says.

Patients with decompensated cirrhosis are known to have very high rates of hospitalization, putting increasing financial pressure on hospitals and physician groups to prevent these hospitalizations. A Sunday afternoon AASLD symposium — co-chaired by Elliot B. Tapper, MD, and Michael L. Volk, MD — will provide attendees with an overview of the problem.

A multidisciplinary panel will discuss current treatment options for benign solid and cystic liver masses, as well as the surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma during Monday morning’s AASLD symposium “The Management of Liver Masses,” co-chaired by Chirag Desai, MD.

During Sunday’s AASLD symposium “Role of Gut Microbiome in NAFLD and Progression of Fibrosis,” an expert panel of clinician-scientists will discuss recent research that is shedding light on the gut microbiome’s impact on hepatobiliary disease. Rohit Loomba, MD, shares more.
